sign nowOn 23 December, Stratos Television, the country's only nationwide independent non-commercial channel ceased broadcasting.
Stratos broadcast a mix of English-language news programmes from the likes of Al Jazeera and the ABC, foreign language content aimed at ethnic minorities, and locally-produced public service content.
According to Its chief executive Jim Blackman, Stratos' annual operating costs were only $NZ1.2 million. Most of this tiny budget was spent paying a state-owned company for transmission services.
