Rebroadcast Stratos Television and secure the future of public service television in New Zealand.

Goal : 717 / 10000

On 23 December, Stratos Television, the country's only nationwide independent non-commercial channel ceased broadcasting.

Stratos broadcast a mix of English-language news programmes from the likes of Al Jazeera and the ABC, foreign language content aimed at ethnic minorities, and locally-produced public service content.

According to Its chief executive Jim Blackman, Stratos' annual operating costs were only $NZ1.2 million. Most of this tiny budget was spent paying a state-owned company for transmission services.

Many public service broadcasters such as Stratos and regional television stations won’t appear able to survive the digital switch over which will conclude nationwide by 1 December 2013, due in part to higher transmission costs and government unwillingness to support them in an increasingly commercialised media landscape.

The government’s unwillingness is demonstrated through the closure of TVNZ 6 and on June 2012 TVNZ 7. This decision leaves New Zealand as the only developed country without a broadly-targeted, state-funded broadcaster.

Please support this petition to rebroadcast Stratos Television and secure the future of public service television in New Zealand, whose programming provides substance over style which the commercial broadcasters increasingly can’t seemingly equal.

Bring back Stratos, we deseparately need true public broadcasting with news, sports, current affairs etc. There should be an act of parliament like it is in Australia stopping what they call siphoning off top sports, movies etc from public free to view to pay tv.

Why not pop over and sign the petition to save TVNZ 7: http://issues.co.nz/savetvnz7/ Free TV devoid of Stratos and TVNZ 7 will leave us watching what? Today we find TV's with higher picture quality and lower pictures.

Stratos was the only Channel who was bringing us international programs from many different countries. There was something for everyone. I hope this petition will help to bring us back Stratos in the same way it was before.

For a country that boasts being international and non-racist, New Zealand is very poorly served by the main TV stations. There are thousands of people from other countries living here - Dutch, Serbo-Croatian, German, Brazilian etc.. their culture is hardly catered for and would be so interesting for other people to learn, watch and enjoy. We are one of a few countries in the world that does not have international song contests. Stratos started to bring us the "Eurovision Song Contest" - everyone I spoke to really enjoyed it. We need more international programmes especially from Europe. Please get your friends to sign the petition to bring back Stratos - it was a breath of fresh air in a country that has got overloaded with American programmes.

I totally agree. More international programms and movies is what made Stratos special. To the Eurovision Song Contest: It took 25 years before we could follow it here in NZ again. Probably it will take the same time until we have another chance. I can't see that any other channel might be interested to show it. 140 countries or up to 600 Million people watch it every year. In the last 3 years we were part of it thanks to Stratos. Will we miss out this year again?

I was hoping to work with Triangle/Stratos in 2012, so I was very dismayed when I couldn't watch the PBS/VOA NewsHour with Jim Lehrer recently on Sky's channel 89. I love that I can go directly to the PBS website to access this content, without charge and in crystal clear quality, but I will always remember staying up late on weeknights to watch Triangles's old analogue broadcasts. Thanks for showing the "most intelligent"* news programme available on NZ television. *as described by the NZ Herald's John Drinnan. PS Al Jazeera English never deserved to bump the NewsHour from its 6:30pm time slot.

Response to signatory 318 Steve Ellmers, Comment: What does the petition actually propose should be done? A valid question, I do confess that the statement above in this online petition is rather concise, an explanation of the value of public service television, in particular (but not limited to) Stratos. A brief outline of the problems facing these providers, and a rather vague explanation of the petition cause; “Please support this petition to rebroadcast Stratos Television and secure the future of public service television in New Zealand”. I will make it clear here that I am no expert on the politics or bureaucracy of broadcasting. I am an “ordinary” person generally with a critical or cynical attitude to any government, red, blue, or whatever. I do however enjoy informative programming, and usually through this, I am reasonably up to date on the news behind the news. I was however dumbfounded to one day find that Stratos had pulled the plug, this being a service from which I done a great deal of my TV viewing. That is why I felt compelled to act independently to create this petition, when I found no such progress elsewhere of which I am aware of. Given this particular government’s plans that we are aware of in the works, and from experience, this also sufficiently aggravated me to take this course of action. Back to the question, I initially intend this petition to act as a means of gaining public weight of numbers as to their dissatisfaction of the situation, which can be made apparent to the minister concerned. We sign this petition with the goal of seeing the services we enjoy remaining securely in place. Possible solutions that we suggest will be presented to the minister in a letter referring to this petition, when either the 10,000 signature goal or otherwise arises. I regard it wise to draw the minister’s or government’s attention to the petition before June when TVNZ 7 closes. One must acknowledge that it is unlikely that this online petition can be tabled in parliament, but it however demonstrates the public outcry to government. See: http://www.saveradionz.co.nz/take-action/sign-the-e-petition/ Apparent on the Facebook campaigns; Stratos TV, Save TVNZ 7, and Save RNZ, are a good source of discussion, suggestions of solutions and general statements of dissatisfaction. I implore all concerned to actively discuss solutions, this including the staff of the services we enjoy. Also as stated on the Stratos and Save TVNZ 7 websites, submission by the public to our ministers of letters of concern will be of great help, assisting this petition in demonstrating the weight of our outcry. It’s apparent to us all looking at the news, that through recent history the government is clearly favouring commercialisation of our media over the relevance that the public service broadcasters can provide so well. July 2011. The government’s Television New Zealand Amendment Bill avoids state owned TV from providing programming of public service in favour of generating profit. Gone is the charter which was gold plated in its intentions. The disposed Digital Broadcasting Review of Regulation, results in subscription services carrying free to air content from paying their dues unlike other jurisdictions. See: http://www.nzherald.co.nz/television/news/article.cfm?c_id=339&objectid=10756281 http://www.mediaspy.org/report/2011/12/31/where-to-now-for-nz-public-broadcasting/ http://pundit.co.nz/content/stratos-is-dead-whos-next http://www.nzherald.co.nz/television/news/article.cfm?c_id=339&objectid=10775829 Also search the web you’ll gain the clear impression that the government generally prefers commercial TV over public. If you signed this petition, like me or us all, you are no doubt appalled with the idea of having TV devoid of anything informative like the services we had or currently enjoy. We are aware that this government has many unpopular and questionable plans on the books. If you want to reap the consequences, do nothing. But if you want to see more than the rhetoric of National’s election slogan of “building a brighter future”, we the people must pick up the slack and stand up. Most of us currently find ourselves facing fewer opportunities to enrich our lives. Public service broadcasters would no doubt have to find innovative funding structures to survive, it’s unlikely that whatever the government may be, that these services could indefinitely survive from suckling off the government’s frosty teat. They should perhaps also consider donations similar in format to the PBS in the US. I’m sure most of us would be more than happy to provide an occasional small donation to preserve a quality service, than pay on going fees for the televised indigestion (repeats and repeats) that Sky TV offers, which is also out of reach of many financially. Anyway if our TV screens are going to be heavily or entirely commercialised, why can’t some of the profits that the government will collect provide a future for free to air public TV? Where is it going? Public TV can function on a paltry sum and deliver quality the commercial sector unlikely can rival. Size isn’t everything. I could continue longer with this rant however, I hope it assures you and many other signatories to the value of this petition, our collective concern and action of preserving what we know is best!

My Mum is from The Netherlands & she always watched the Dutch news to keep up to date with what is happening on the other side of the world. She is elderly & not able to get out of house much but she also loved watching the old movies that were on late at night if she was having trouble sleeping. So please NZ listen to what the people want.

I really enjoyed the news in different languages, especially the german and french news. As I am working in the daytime, I used to record them every day and watched it in the evening. I feel really at a loss now, not getting the information and pictures I was used to. How come a whole channel is reserved for the chinese descendants, yet, there is not much for those of us with european roots. Please bring it back.

I just got freeview and was looking forward very much to receiving the Stratos channel again. I was properly gutted when I realised it had 'gone out of business'. It was a channel dedicated to offering different points of view and perspectives and also one that treated its audience as if they were educated and had some idea as to what was going on in the world. It did not offer lip service to multiculturalism or diversity but was a glowing advertisement and endorsement for why they are important in our media. Stratos should not be subject to the normal criteria applied to commercial channels. It was what I would call public service in the broadest possible sense. It added so much to our media filtered world. Such a pity.
